Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) has been nip and tuck for several years now with Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport for the title of world's busiest airport.

O'Hare is a major hub for Chicago-based United Airlines and for Dallas-based American Airlines. In addition to these two giants, over 40 other carriers fly out of O'Hare. Looking out of any terminal window towards the runways, one may see aircraft bearing the markings of not only the major U.S.-based carriers like Delta, Continental, and US Air, but many international carriers-Aer Lingus, KLM Royal Dutch, British Air, Lufthansa, Swiss Air, JAL (Japan Airlines,) Pakistan International, Royal Jordanian, and many more-as they transport passengers to more than 60 destinations around the world.

O'Hare is known for schedule-busting weather-related delays and flight cancellations, but even so it was named "Best Airport in America" by the U.S. Edition of Business Traveler Magazine. There is a project underway to expand the terminal capacities and improve the runway configuration in a way that will help relieve congestion.

O'Hare is a non-smoking airport, except in designated areas.

WiFi Internet service is available, with numerous hot spots located in each of the four terminals.

O'Hare Directions

From Downtown - Take I-90 west until you reach the I-190 West Airport Exit. Follow signs to the appropriate terminal.

From the North - Take I-294 South until you reach the I-190 West Airport Exit.

From the South - Take I-294 North until you reach the I-190 West Airport Exit.

Terminal 1

Terminal 1's gates are occupied primarily by United Airlines, their regional subsidiary United Express, and their 'no frills' subsidiary Ted Airlines. Some Lufthansa departures also operate from Terminal 1. This terminal is relatively new and looks very futuristic. Concourse C has been used as a movie location; in the 1999 movie "Runaway Bride," star Julia Roberts appeared in a scene shot in Concourse C.

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 serves Air Canada, Continental, Continental Express, Jet Blue, Northwest, Northwest Airlink, United, United Express, US Airways, and US Airways Express. Please note that the baggage check-in and claim for all United and United Express flights is located in Terminal 1.

The front portion of Terminal 2 is on two levels: the upper level contains flight and baggage check-in plus the TSA security checkpoint; it is served by a roadway with passenger drop-off zones. The lower level houses the baggage claim area, ground transportation booths, and rental car booths. Outside are the taxi, limo, and shuttle pickup areas, as well as rental car shuttles.

Terminal 2's upper level has two Concourses: Concourse E, with gates E-1 and E-1A through E-7; and Concourse F with gates F-1 through F-14. One passageway leads from the flight/baggage check-in area through security to both Concourses. Passengers must first pass through the security checkpoints before reaching most of the food and retail shopping found in Terminal 2.

Terminal 3

Terminal 3 serves Alaska Airlines, American Airlines (domestic and international departures only,) American Eagle, Delta Airlines, Delta Connection (Comair,) Iberia (departures only,) and Spirit Airlines.

The front portion of Terminal 3 is on two levels. The upper level contains flight and baggage check-in plus TSA security checkpoint; it is served by a roadway with passenger drop-off zones. The lower level houses baggage claim, ground transportation booths, and rental car booths. Outside are the taxi, limo, and shuttle pickup areas, as well as rental car shuttles.

Terminal 3 is divided into four Concourses: Concourse G, with gate G-1 through G-21; and Concourse H with gates H-1 through H-18; Concourse K, with Gates K-1 through K-20, and Concourse L, with Gates L-1 through L-10. Passengers must first pass through the security checkpoints before reaching most of the food and retail shopping found in Terminal 3.

Terminal 5

Overview

In 1993, O'Hare's sparkling new International Terminal 5 opened to much fanfare. Much more spacious than its predecessor, the former Terminal 4, the newer Terminal 5 sports an ultramodern décor. However, Terminal 5 is unfortunately lacking in food, beverage, and shopping compared to the other three O'Hare terminals.

Terminal 5 serves a long list of international air carriers: Aer Lingus, AeroMexico, Air France, Air India, Air Jamaica, Alitalia, All Nippon Airways (ANA,) American (international arrivals,) Asiana, BMI British Midland, British Airways, Cayman Airways, EL AL Israel, Iberia, Japan Airlines (JAL), KLM Royal Dutch, Korean Air, LOT Polish, Lufthansa, Mexicana, Pakistan International, Royal Jordanian, SAS, South African Airways, SWISS, TACA, Turkish Airlines, United (International Arrivals), USA 3000 and Virgin Atlantic.

Terminal 5 has two levels: the upper level handles departing passenger ticketing and baggage check-in plus the TSA security checkpoints; it is served by a roadway with passenger drop-off zones. The lower level houses US Immigration and the Customs Service, the passenger immigration entry hall, baggage claim, ground transportation booths, and rental car booths. Outside are the taxi, limo, and shuttle pickup areas, as well as rental car shuttles.

Terminal 5 is some distance from domestic Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and the Airport Transit System (ATS) is the only means of transport between them. To reach CTA from Terminal 5, take the ATS train to Terminal 3 and then follow signs to the CTA Station.

Terminal 5 has but a single Concourse: Concourse M, which house gates M-1 - M-21.
