LAX sees more than sixty million passengers every year. In fact, Los Angeles International Airport is the world's largest hub for flights heading to Asia. After opening in 1928, LAX has continued to expand and turn into one of the world's busiest airports-currently ranked number five. LAX sits on more than 3,000 acres about fifteen miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The airport has four parallel runways that head east/west. A new control tower took over flight control in 1996 standing more than 100 feet taller than its predecessor. Passengers can tune to AM530 for airport information including traffic reports.

There are nine terminals at LAX: Terminals 1 through 8 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal. The terminals are reached by free airport shuttles or walkways from the garages. Only Terminals 4 through 8 are in a connected building. In addition, there is the Theme Building (the former control tower) where a few restaurants, memorials, and works of art can be viewed during long layovers. Panoramic views of Los Angeles are available from the top of the glass walled building.

At the moment there are designated smoking areas, but law changes may eliminate some or all of these. Currently, smokers may light up in the painted areas between Bus Gate 22A and the ticketing counter in Terminal; between gate 31A and 38 in Terminal 3; beneath gate 48B in Terminal 4; on the moat level near gate 54A in Terminal 5; moat level adjacent to gate 65 in Terminal 6; to the east of gate 81 in Terminal 8; and behind the United Express administration trailer.

Directions

To reach Los Angeles International Airport drivers have a couple of options. Sepulveda Boulevard has exits for LAX from both the north and south. Another option is to that the 105 West Freeway to Sepulveda Boulevard and then taking the airport exit. From the 405 Freeway, drivers can take Century Boulevard West and then follow it to World Way. World Way is a horseshoe shaped road that passes by each of the terminals before coming back out to the exits for Century Boulevard or Sepulveda Boulevard.

Tom Bradley International Terminal

Serving only international flights, airlines using the Tom Bradley International Terminal include Aer Lingus, Aeroflot, Air India, Air Pacific, Air Tahiti Nui, Alaskan Airlines (Mexico only), All Nippon, Asiana, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, Copa (Arrivals only), El Al, EVA Air, Japan Airlines, Korean Air, LAN Airlines, LAN Peru, Lufthansa, Malaysia, Mexicana, Philippine Airlines, Qantas, Singapore, Spirit (Arrivals only), Swiss Airlines, TACA (Evening Arrivals), and Thai. Tom Bradley International Terminal (named after the esteemed mayor) is the largest of the terminals and also sees the highest amount of passenger traffic in the airport. The main building branches into a North Concourse and a South Concourse.

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 serves America West, Southwest, and US Airways. Gates 3A, 3B, 4A, 4B, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12B, and 13 are found in this T shaped terminal. The main part of the T houses restrooms, ticketing, and security, while the rest has the gates, most of the shops and restaurants, and services.

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 is also T shaped and set up exactly like Terminal 1. The only difference is that this terminal has two gates-Gate 24 and Gate 28. Airlines served by Terminal 2 include Air Canada, Air China, Air France, Air New Zealand, Aviacsa, Avianca, Hawaiian Air, KLM, LACSA, Northwest, TACA, and Virgin Atlantic. The Bob Hope Hollywood USO building for military members and their families is open daily from 10am to 10pm. A free snack bar, big-screen television, VCR, tables, luggage storage, and plenty of reading material is available to make waiting more comfortable.

Terminal 3

AirTran Airways, Alaska Airlines, American Trans Air, Frontier, Horizon, Midwest Express, Spirit, Sun Country, and WestJet all use Terminal 3. Terminal 3 contains a long hallway that leads to an oval shaped room. Gates 30 (located in the hallway), 31A, 31B, 31C, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37A, 37B, 38, and 39 are all found in Terminal 3. Gate 30 is the only gate located within the hallway; the others are in the oval shaped area.

Terminal 4

Terminal 4 serves American, American Eagle, and some Qantas. This terminal is much like Terminal 3 only there are more gates found in the hallway. Gates 41, 42A, 42B, 43A, 43B, 44, 45, 46, 47, and 48 are found within Terminal 4.

Terminal 5

Terminal 5 serves Aerolitoral, Aeromexico (Arrivals only), Air Jamaica, and Delta. Terminal 5 consists of a long, wide hallway that holds Gates 50B, 51A, 51B, 52A, 52B, 53A, 53B, 54A, 54B, 55A, 55B, 56, 57A, 57B, 58A, and 58B. Restaurants are all located in the center most part of the hallway creating what looks much like a large food court area.

Terminal 6

A long hallway, oval shaped room, and then star shaped room make up Terminal 6. Gates 60, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 67A, 67B, 68A, 68B, and 69A are located within this terminal. Airlines served by Terminal 6 include Aeromexico (Departures only), Continental, Copa (Departures only), and United. Restaurants, shops, and services are scattered throughout the terminal making it easy for passengers to grab a bite to eat in relative proximity to their gate.

Terminal 7

TED and United fly in and out of Terminal 7. Terminal 7 houses Gates 70A, 70B, 71A, 71B, 72A, 72B, 73A, 73B, 74, 75, 76, and 78. The terminal contains a long, wide hallway that leads to an oval shaped room that they joins a square room. Restaurants, shops and services are situated more in the center of the terminal where the oval and long hallway join.

Terminal 8

Terminal 8 is a long hallway that houses Gates 80 through 88. Restaurants are located in the first third of this hallway. TED and United Express fly in and out of Terminal 8. Terminal 8 does not contain any shops, so passengers hoping to buy last minute reading material or gifts should plan accordingly.
