Located seven miles northwest from downtown Dallas, Dallas Love Field Airport opened to passenger traffic in the fall of 1927, before this the buildings had been used as an Army training base for World War I soldiers. In fact, the airport was named for one Army Lieutenant, Moss Lee Love, who crashed in California. It was in 1927 that Charles Lindbergh stopped at Dallas for his "Spirit of Saint Louis" tour drawing attention to Love Field.

In 1979, House Leader Jim Wright, acting on a law passed by former President Carter, passed the Wright Amendment stating that airlines from Love Field could only fly to Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Alabama, Kansas, and Mississippi were added in 1997. In 2004, Southwest Airlines pushed to have the Wright Amendment lifted calling it "anti-competitive". This lead to the "Right to Fly Act" in 2005 opening the door for flights between many U.S. cities and Love Field.

The City of Dallas finds itself with two major airports, Love Field and DFW (Dallas/Fort Worth International), Love Field handles domestic flights only. Love Field serves more than 100 flights per day to dozens of cities across the United States. In 2005 alone, Love Field saw almost six million passengers and that number has been steadily increasing. Smokers should note that Dallas Love Field is a non-smoking airport and smokers cannot smoke in or around the main terminal buildings.

Directions To Dallas Love Field Airport

Dallas Love Field Airport is accessible via either the I-35 East, US 75, or the Dallas North Tollway. Drivers taking the I-35 East need to heading into Dallas and watch for the Mockingbird Lane exit and head east. Take the left onto Cedar Springs Road and follow signs to the terminal building.

From both the Tollway and the US 75 into Dallas, drivers will watch for the Mockingbird Lane exit and head west. Follow Mockingbird Lane to Cedar Springs Road and turn right. From here, follow airport signs.

Main Terminal

The main terminal at Dallas Love Field features a baggage claim concourse, north, east, and west concourse, as well as a huge concourse that serves only Southwest Airlines. The Southwest Airlines Concourse holds gates 1 through 12 and has a number of shops and restaurants. The West Concourse houses access to the Conference Center and the entrance to the Southwest Airlines Concourse. The East Concourse features the American Airlines Counter, Delta Ticket Counter, Continental Ticket Counter, main lobby, and Gates 26 and 31. Finally, the North Concourse holds Gate 21 that handles Delta flights. Handicapped accessible bathrooms are found throughout the terminal. Security checkpoints are located at the entrance to the North Concourse and the Southwest Airlines Concourse.

To the south is the Baggage Claim Concourse where all arriving passengers claim their baggage. The rental car desks are also found in this area.
