Madrid-Barajas airport lies about 8 miles northeast of the city and has four terminals: Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4. It is both the biggest and the busiest airport in Spain, serving as the hub for Iberia and Spanair, as well as handling the majority of connections to Central and South America that originate out of Europe. To deal with increasing traffic, the airport opened its newest terminal (Terminal 4) in February of 2006. For the over 40 million passengers who pass through Madrid-Barajas every year, there are WiFi spots in the VIP lounges and in the many restaurants throughout the airport. Directions

If you're coming from the M-40 (Madrid's ring road), take exit 9A to the M-14/Airport. The M-14 takes you directly to Terminals 1 through 3. For Terminal 4, take the M-14 to the M-13 and take exit 0A. From the A2, take exit 12 to the M-14 and follow the same directions as above. The M-11 takes you straight to Terminals 1 through 3. For Terminal 4, continue on M-11 to the M-14 and follow the same directions as above.

Terminal 1

Primarily handling international flights, Terminal 1 services the following airlines: Aerolíneas Argentinas, Aerlingus, Aeroméxico, , Air Cairo, Air China, Air Comet, Air Europa (non-Schengen and third-country destinations), Air France, Air Transat, Alitalia, Blue Air, BRA Transportes Aéreos, Bulgaria Air, Condor, Continental, Cubana de Aviación, Delta Air Lines, Easyjet, Germanwings, Girjet, Germanwings, KLM, LOT, Lufthansa, Meridiana, My Way, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Pluna, Portugalia, Pullmantur, Qatar Airways, Ryanair, Santa Barbara, Saudi Arab, Swiss, Thai Airways, Transavia, Travel Service, Tunisair, US Airways and Wind Jet. Check-in is on the first floor, while most boarding takes place on the ground and first floors. All boarding gates are accessed through one of three zones: A, B and C. Baggage claim 1 and 2 are located on the ground floor.

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 serves fewer airlines than the larger Terminals 1 and 4. The following airlines operate out of Terminal 2: Aebal, Air Berlin, Air Europa (domestic and Schengen destinations), Air Portugal TAP, LTU, SAS, SAS Norway and Spanair. Check-in desks are located on the 1st and 2nd floors, while all boarding gates are on the1st floor and separated into zones C and D. Baggage claim carousels 5 and 6 can be found on the ground floor.

Terminal 3

Terminal 3, the smallest of all four terminals, is mainly for domestic flights. In this terminal you'll find Lagunair and the Madrid-Barcelona Spanair Shuttle. Check-in is on the ground floor, except for the Madrid-Barcelona Spanair Shuttle, which is on the 1st floor along with an auto check-in option. Boarding gates for zone F are on the ground floor and gates for zone E can be found on the 1st and 2nd floors. Baggage claim 6 and 7 are on the ground floor.

Terminal 4

Terminal 4 is the newest terminal and it serves: Aeroflot, Air Algerie, Air Nostrum, American Airlines, Avianca, BA Connect, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, CSA Czech Airlines, Egypt Air, El Al Israel Airlines, Finnair, Iberia, Iberworld, Luxair, Lan Group, Malev, Olympic, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, Syrian Arab, Tarom, Turkish, Ukraine International, Vueling. Check-in for all flights is on the 2nd floor, however, boarding is either in the Terminal 4 building or the satellite building known as T4S. An automated shuttle runs between Terminal 4 and T4S. Boarding for gates in zones H, J and K are on the 1st floor of Terminal 4, while gates for M, R, S and U are at T4S. Baggage claim 10 and 11 for both buildings is on the ground floor of Terminal 4.
