Manchester Airport located in Northern England and sees more than 22 million passengers every year. Construction began in 1928 leading to the opening of the airport in 1930. Over time, expansions and renovations helped shape Manchester Airport. After purchasing the East Midlands and Bournemouth Airport in 2001, Manchester Airport took its rightful place as the second biggest airport in the United Kingdom, topped only by London Heathrow. With continued growth, it may top the list as the busiest airport as well. Located within ten miles of Manchester, the airport is simple to reach from the city and easy to navigate once inside.

Today, renovations are still being completed in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. The goal is to speed up baggage sorting, install new carpeting, enhance shopping, and update all computerized and mechanical equipment ensuring that the airport is modern and efficient. In February 2007 Manchester Airport enacted new non-smoking policies. Smokers must head to the outdoor smoking areas that will be found adjacent to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 arrivals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 departures, and outside the ground level exits at Terminal 3.

Directions

To reach Manchester Airport, passengers will find it easiest to travel to the M56 heading towards Manchester City. Either Junction 5 or Junction 6 will lead to the airport. Those opting for Junction 5 will head east and follow signs for the correct terminal. Atlanta Avenue leads directly in front of Terminal 2, Outwood Lane passes Terminal 1, and Ringway Road passes Terminal 3. Junction 6 leads to the World Freight Terminal that they connects up with the other terminals via Thorley Lane.

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 is connected to Terminal 3. Terminal 1 is the southern most terminal on airport grounds and serves Aer Arann, Aer Lingus, Air Berlin, Air Canada, Air Transat, AirBaltic, Aurigny Air Services, Austrian Airlines, AviaJet, BH Air, Brussels Airlines, City Airline, Cyprus Airways, Cyprus Turkish Airlines, Etihad Airways, Eurocypria, EuroManx, Finnair, Flyjet, Futura International Airways, Icelandair, Helvetic Airways, Jet2, Libyan Airways, LOT, Lufthansa, Luxair, Monarch Airlines, MyTravel, Nouvelair, Ryan Air, SAS, Sky Europe, Swiss International Air Lines, Thomas Cook Airlines, TUIfly, and Turkish Airlines. Check-In and ticketing are found on the ground level, Level 2, and contain far more shops and restaurants as well as the covered passage leading to Terminal 3. Security checkpoints are found at the back of Level 2 leading to the other half of Level 2. Ticketed passengers are the only people allowed past the security checkpoints. Past security are a number of stores and many restaurants are found in the food court.

Upstairs is a large room with check-in counters, more stores and restaurants, and then the concourse leading to the security checkpoints. Passengers with tickets are the only people allowed beyond this point. Gates 201 to 210 and Gate 300 are found to the left and Gates 211 through 215 are to the right.

Terminal 3

The first level of Terminal 3 has a couple shops and handles arrivals in the v-shaped building. Upstairs, there are a few more stores, ticketing, and check-in in the v-shaped area before passing through security into departures. Ticketed passengers are the only people allowed past security. Terminal 3 is located in the former Terminal 1 Domestic building, and contains eighteen gates. Most of the gates are only accessible via air bridges. Airlines serving Terminal 3 include Air Southwest, American Airlines, BMI, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Eastern Airways, Flybe, OneWorld, and VLM Airlines. Plans are underway to expand Terminal 3.

The Station

Situated in a central location to all terminals, the Station is Manchester Airport's railway and bus station. Northern Rail and TransPennine Express serve the airport with train service bringing passengers to all corners of Northern England. Many bus lines offer transportation as well. The three level Station has a few services, restaurants, and shops. Two railway platforms (a third is in the planning stages) and bus parking is found on the lowest floor. The second floor handles ticketing and check-in and has a few services available. The third floor contains a trio of shops and links the Station to the Radisson SAS Hotel, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 by two covered hallways (Skylink). Passengers can access Terminal 3 by passing through Terminal 1.

World Freight Terminal

Passengers generally do not deal with the World Freight Terminal. World Freight Terminal handles all of the freight shipments and postal mailings. Cathay Pacific, Dragonair Cargo, China Airlines Cargo, Great Wall Airlines, FedEx, and Jett8 Airlines Cargo all fly from the World Freight Terminal.
