Sydney Airport (less commonly referred to as the Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport) opened in 1920 and continues to be the first airport in the world to run continuously. While other airports have closed down during wars or due to bankruptcies, Sydney Kingston Smith International Airport succeeds serving almost 30 million passengers per year. There are three runways to help keep air traffic moving steadily, and this tends to help prevent tiresome delays that other airports face. In general, travelers all agree that Sydney Airport offers a nice mix of stores, restaurants, and amenities and a pleasing layout that makes the airport a breeze to navigate. Long layovers pass quickly because there is a lot to do.

Today, many airports have become no-smoking zones. Sydney Airport is no different. Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the building or near any public zone. There are a couple of smoking areas a short walk from terminals on the departures and arrival roadway.

By the year 2010, renovations required by Project STAR (State of the Art Renewal) will be complete. Plans are to bring Terminal 1 up to date with today's technology, improve Terminal 2, and prepare the runways so that they can handle the Airbus 380. Sydney Airport is among the top ten best airports and with these improvements hopes are that the airport will top the list.

Directions

Reaching Sydney Airport is pretty easy regardless of the starting point. All drivers should head towards Mascot, NSW, Australia, just six miles to the south of Sydney. The airport is well marked with universal airport signs (a large white airplane on a darker background) and road signs should be easy to follow. Those looking for the International Terminal (Terminal 1) want the Airport Drive turn-off. Those wanting Terminal 2 or Terminal 3 (both Domestic) should look for Joyce Drive or Qantas Drive.

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 serves all international flights that arrive and depart from Sydney Airport. There are a total of 34 gates within T1. The first level houses all arrivals and baggage claim. Car rental reservation desks are to the far right from the passenger exits. On the second level, passengers will find all of the check-ins A through K, security/immigration checkpoints. To the left is Area B with gates 8 through 37 and Area C is to the right of the main area and houses gates 50 through 63. A large food court is in the center of the building behind Check-In F and G, the general public are allowed into this area, but not into Area B or Area C. Guests waiting for passengers to arrive and those who are flying from Sydney Airport will find that there is a huge number of restaurants and stores suitable for browsing while waiting on a flight.

Terminal 1 serves Aerolineas Argentinas, Air Calin, Air Canada, Air China, Air France, Air Mauritius, Air New Zealand, Air Niugini, Air Pacific, Air Tahiti Nui, Air Vanuatu, Asiana Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Freedom Air, Garuda Indonesia, Hawaiian Airlines, Japan Airlines, JALways, Jet Airways, JetStar International, Korean Air, LanChile, Malaysia Airlines, Pacific Blue, Philippine Airlines, Polynesian Blue, Qantas International, Royal Brunei Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Thai Airways, United Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, and Viva Macau.

Terminal 2

All of Sydney Airport's domestic flights are handled by Terminal 2. A total of eighteen gates are located within T2. Terminal 2 houses a number of shops and restaurants where passengers can kill time while waiting for flights. Most of the restaurants are found in the central food court near the escalators. Gates are evenly divided between Pier A and Pier B. Pier A serves Virgin Blue flights, while Pier B handles AeroPelican Air Services, Big Sky Express, JetStar, Qantas Link, and Rex Regional Express flights that are heading throughout Australia.

Terminal 3

Terminal 3 handles all domestic flights for Australia's largest airline company, Qantas. There are a total of thirteen gates in T3. Situated behind Terminal 2, passengers can reach the terminal via a covered walkway or free shuttle service. Qantas is the only airline flying from Terminal 3, and the airline flies to and from Adelaide, Alice Springs, Ayers Rock, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Darwin, Gold Coast, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, Sunshine Coast, and Townsville. Terminal 3 lacks any restaurants or shops, but there is a nice selection in the neighboring Terminal 2.
