One of the world's best mid-sized airports, Vancouver International Airport received acclaim in 2001 after hurriedly taking over many flight routes between the U.S. and Asia after airports shut down on 9/11. Since then, the airport has become a favorite of many travelers thanks to a wide selection of stores, restaurants, and services that fit all budgets. Presently, the airport handles about 17 million passengers per year.

There are three terminals within Vancouver International Airport. The Domestic and International Terminals are connected by long hallways, while the South Terminal, which handles small charter flights, is located farther away in a remote area of the airport grounds. Shopping at both the International and Domestic Terminals is better than many shopping malls. Stores and restaurants are able to cater to any budget making long layovers a delightful experience.

Vancouver International Airport is a non-smoking airport, but two lounges are located after security checkpoints in both the Domestic and International Terminals. These lounges are sealed off from the public and well ventilated allowing smokers to get a cigarette in before their flight.

Directions to Vancouver Airport

Those driving to Vancouver International Airport will find it is easy accessible from many of Western Canada's main highway and interstate systems. As the airport is on the coast, travelers will take either Highway 1 or Highway 91 to access Highway 99 which leads to the airport exits.

Passengers coming from the south will take Highway 99 towards Vancouver. Taking Exit 39 brings you to Bridgeport Road/Vancouver International Airport. After taking a left onto Bridgeport Road, drivers will drive for about a mile and take the Main Terminal Ramp and then merge onto Grant McConachie Way. Those coming from the Southwest will follow Russ Baker Way and watch for airport signs. The instructions from the south are the same for those coming from the east, only they will need to take Highway 10 West and merge onto Highway 99. Follow airport terminal signs from here.

From the north, drivers should take Highway 99 South to Highway 1A/Highway 99 and travel for about four miles taking the right onto Howe Street. From Howe Street, watch for Granville Street South Exit and take it merging onto Granville Street. Around five miles down the road is the left turn for the airport, drivers will take this and go onto the Arthur Laing Bridge staying right onto Grant McConachie Way. Airport Terminal signs are easy to follow from this point.

Domestic Terminal

The lowest level of the Domestic Terminal is labeled the Airport Service Plaza. There is little to this level other than walkways to the parking areas and the escalators to the upper levels. Upstairs, passengers will find the Arrivals Level complete with a few services and baggage claim. The third level is the busiest area. There are many stores and restaurants found within the check-in area, the C Gates (32 through 51), the B Gates (11 through 22) and the A Gates (1 through 5). The Domestic Terminal serves Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz, Air North, Central Mountain Air, SkyService, SunWing Airlines, and WestJet.

International Terminal

The lower level of the International Terminal has a few stores, restaurants, services, and baggage claim. Escalators take passengers to the upstairs that houses many more stores and services. International Check-In is to the left while U.S. Check-In is to the right, a food court sits in the middle of the two. Security checks on the left bring passengers to the the D Gates (50 to 73), while U.S. Customs and Border Patrol checkpoints lead to the U.S. Departures handled by the E Gates (71 to 96.) The International Terminal serves Air Canada, Air Canada Jazz, Air China, Air New Zealand, Air Pacific, Air Transat, Alaska Airlines, America West, American Airlines, Belair, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Condor Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Delta Connection, EVA Air, FlyGlobeSpan, Frontier Airlines, Horizon Air, Japan Airlines, KLM, Korean Air, LTU, Lufthansa, Martainair, Mesa Airlines, Mexicana, Northwest Airlines, Northwest Airlink, Oasis Hong Kong, Philippine Airlines, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, SkyService, Thomas Cook Airlines, United Airlines, United Express, US Airways, WestJet, and Zoom Airlines.

South Terminal

The South Terminal is located a ways from the main airport, but it is the location for all flights heading to remote areas of British Columbia. Baxter Aviation, Hawkair, Howe Sound Seaplanes, KD Air Corporation, Orca Airways, Saltspring Island Air, Seair Seaplanes, Tofino Air, and West Coast Air all fly from the South Terminal. Shuttle service is available to the Domestic and International Terminals.
