The extrativista industry of oil has been the largest employer in the city of Macae. At this time, 4,126 companies are located in the city with 2,016 commercial/industrial and 2,110 lenders of service. Diverse projects are being executed to develop tourism so people can enjoy the natural landscape and aesthetic value of the city. Modification projects are in place for the Shops of the Opened Sky, the Avenue Rui Barbosa, the municipal public hospital (largest in Rio), the airport, and the Macae Center (the largest center of conventions in Rio which hosts the International Fair of Oil and Brazil Off Shore).
