If you plan to stay a week or more, renting a cottage may be more economical than staying at a hotel. Motels

Until recently Chincoteague's only accommodations were small, family-run motels and bed-and-breakfasts. The small motels are still here, and by and large possess more charm and hands-on attention that the island's two chain motels: the Comfort Suites, 4195 Main St. (tel. 800/228-5150 or 757/336-3700; fax 757/336-5452; www.chincoteaguechamber.com/comfortsuites), and the Hampton Inn & Suites, 4179 Main St. (tel. 800/HAMPTON or 757/336-1616; www.hamptoninnsuiteschincoteague.com). These new motels are next to each other beside Chincoteague Channel. Both have heated indoor pools but neither has a restaurant.

Campgrounds

Chincoteague has several family-oriented campgrounds. Most convenient to Assateague is the Maddox Family Campground, 6742 Maddox Blvd. (at the traffic circle), (tel. 757/336-3111; fax 757/336-1980; www.chincoteague.com/maddox), which has 550 campsites, some with views of the Assateague Lighthouse. On the grounds are a pool, playground, pavilion, a grocery store with RV supplies, laundry room, bathhouses, dump station, and propane filling station. Rates range from $27 for a tent site to $35 for full hookup. Discover, MasterCard, and Visa are accepted.
